HIGHLANDS’ STUDENTS NAMED NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP SEMIFINALISTS

(September 13, 2017) Highlands High School seniors Savannah B. and Natalie Reed have been named semifinalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program. Additionally, Highlands had four commended students: Joseph Broering, Audrey C., Bonny L. and Samantha L.

The National Merit® Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test in October of their junior year. Of the 1.5 million entrants, some 50,000 with the highest PSAT scores qualify for recognition in the National Merit® Scholarship Program.

In September, these high scorers are notified through their schools that they have qualified as either a Commended Student or Semifinalist. More than two-thirds receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise, and approximately one-third are notified that they have qualified as Semifinalists. In February, some 15,000 Semifinalists will be notified that they have advanced to Finalist standing. By achieving National Merit Finalist standing students qualify for significant college scholarships.
