Highlands Middle School Student Wins State National Geographic Bee

(April 10, 2018) On Friday, April 6, 2018, Highlands Middle School eighth-grader Case G. competed in a field of approximately 100 Kentucky students and triumphantly emerged as Kentucky’s 2018 National Geographic State Bee champion.

As a state champion, Case received a $200 cash prize, a National Geographic Visual Atlas of the World, and a trip to Washington, D.C., where he will represent Kentucky in the national finals at the National Geographic Society headquarters on May 20-23, 2018.

Bees were held in schools with fourth through eighth-grade students throughout the state to determine each school’s Geographic Bee winner. School-level winners then took a qualifying test, which they submitted to the National Geographic Society. In each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, U.S Atlantic and Pacific territories and the Department of Defense Dependents Schools, the National Geographic Society invited the students with the top 100 scores to compete at the state level.

The national Bee champion will receive a $50,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society and an all-expenses-paid Lindblad expedition to the Galapagos Islands.  Second and third-place finishers will receive $25,000 and $10,000 scholarships, respectively.

Case is the son of Randy and Kym G.
