This year-long elective explores, in greater detail, one of the most popular and fascinating and popular topics in psychology – psychological disorders. This elective will focus on the main categories of mental dysfunction as outlined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual. The specific conditions in these categories, such as depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and schizophrenia, will be studied. This will include a discussion of potential causes and symptoms as well as assessment and treatment of these disorders. A main objective of this course will be to de-stigmatize mental illness and help students gain an appreciation of the importance of their mental health.
