Description:

This page contains info about homeroom business & all of the Language Arts websites etc.

Welcome to my Language Arts class! I teach reading, writing & spelling to my homeroom. We cover many writing pieces in the 5th grade including the personal narrative, poems, compare/contrast, On Demand writing (letters and articles), open responses, feature articles etc. We have a wonderful basal reading book called Wonders and I have been working on creating authentic activities for the students to work on as we read the selections. Whenever possible, we read novels in Literature Circles and I love letting the students choose novels that are of interest to them. We complete spelling pages that are typically due Thursday with our spelling test on Friday. The skills covered in spelling teach the students words that they will encounter in their everyday lives. I have been working on individualizing my Language Arts class but this is definitely a work in progress.

It is my goal to make my students better readers and writers. These are skills that we adults use daily. I want to foster a love of reading in my students. I have attended workshops on helping to find better reading selections for boys as well as high interest reading for both girls & boys.

  • Class Blog Info

We are using our class blog space for several things.:
    1. Students are responding to (approximately) monthly journal prompts during computer lab time
    2. Students are preparing & recording a semi-weekly class update of what's going on in the 5th grade (I have been having difficulty with this so this is on a semi-permanent delay until I can get this up and running again)

  • October Book Project

October Book Project: Create a Character

Characters are an important and vital part of any story. This month you will get to become a character of your choice. Students will read a book and write a two to three paragraph summary about the book. They will choose a character from their book and become that character. They will present their summary in class speaking in first person. For example… “My name is August and in the book Wonder, I….”  Be as creative as you want. Dress the part and have fun with it. Book project presentations will be October 26 and 27.
