Artist in Residence - Charlotte Reed

Visiting Artist Charlotte ReedSpring 2013 - Local Artist Charlotte Reed is working with 3rd graders in art class!

We want to offer our gratitude to Charlotte Reed, a ceramicist, working as an artist-in-residence to share her love and passion for clay with 3rd graders in our district. Her abundant creativity is evident as she described her art-making processes, inspiring the students. She discussed how she uses her hands to communicate her ideas in clay, always wanting to try something new. Ms. Reed expressed how she experiments with new ideas; even as a child in California, she built sea turtles, mermaids, and bathtubs in the sand, instead of traditional sand castles.

Ms. Reed shared several art pieces and art images with the students. She has made a variety of 'sanctuaries' to be placed in gardens. Ms. Reed includes many different elements from her life that add unusual twists to these tiny structures - from fashion elements to tea cups. She explains how she loves creating the outdoor pieces for two audiences to enjoy- people and animals.

In addition to her creative approach to art-making, she also helped students understand some of the science behind working with clay, where it comes from, and how we manipulate and change its properties as artists.

Students will collect items from nature to use during a Clay Studio Day, and will explore how these natural materials canbe used to create texture in its surface. Ms. Reed will help guide the students in building this textured vessel from slabs of clay.

These are just a few of the many great pieces created by our students!

Thank you Charlotte Reed for sharing your skills, talents, and time with all of our Fort Thomas 3rd Graders!
