HIGHLANDS’ ENVIROTHON TEAM ADVANCES TO STATE COMPETITION

 

(May 1, 2012) Highlands High School Envirothon students participated in the Kentucky East Regional Envirothon Competition held at Robinson Forest in Jackson, Kentucky, on April 28, 2012, and has qualified for the state competition. State qualifiers include seniors David Corr, Jamie Claypool and Drew Healy, and juniors Scott Vennemann and Will Grau.  Other members who finished in the top ten teams include junior Jill Jones and sophomores Haley Hunt and Sydney Bray.

 

Highlands’ students will travel to Lake Cumberland for the two-day state competition on May 10-11, 2012. The winner of the Kentucky state Envirothon will advance to compete at the International Canon Envirothon on July 22-28, at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania.
 

The Kentucky Envirothon Program started in 1999, and this is the third year that Highlands has entered the competition. The program is open to any student in grades 9-12.  The teams consist of three to five students who are tested on their knowledge of Kentucky’s natural resources at five “in the field” test stations. Each station covers a separate topic addressing soils, forestry, wildlife, aquatics and Non-Point Source Pollution/Low Impact Development. Through hands-on experiments, analysis and use of critical thinking skills, the teams answer a set of questions at each station.
 

The team is supported by the Campbell County Conservation District, Campbell County Cooperative Extension and coaches Colleen Epperson, Robin O’Connor and Aubree Forer.
