FTIS COVID Update - 1.11.2022

January 11, 2022

Dear FTIS Families,

Thank you for continuing to support the Fort Thomas Independent Schools and respecting the ongoing responses related to the COVID global pandemic.  We appreciate the grace being provided to our district and school employees during this challenging time of complex decision making and we request your further patience and partnership as we apply additional layered prevention strategies to help reduce the spread of COVID. In-person instruction remains our top priority.  After careful consideration of current and historical data in our area, we are temporarily returning to 1st semester Healthy at School Protocol with the immediate implementation of universal masking.  This is an effort to institute another prevention strategy to protect students, teachers, and staff and to further reduce the spread of COVID in schools.  The requirement for all persons in our schools to wear face coverings during school hours will be effective on Wednesday, January 12, 2022.  Additional safety protocol for masking for extracurricular activities can be found at our Healthy at School website.  Please have conversations with students about their responsibility to comply with our new expectations.

Guidance for COVID-19 Prevention in K-12 Schools overwhelmingly suggests layered prevention strategies, including those that FTIS has remained firmly committed to at the start of the 2nd semester: promoting vaccination, appropriate distancing, screening, ventilation, handwashing and respiratory etiquette, isolation, and quarantine.  We will continue these practices in all schools.

Decisions around the implementation of layered prevention strategies have been made collaboratively by school and district administrators, in consultation with the Board of Education, and with the consideration of input by other stakeholders.  We will make adjustments as we cautiously monitor COVID cases.  As the current surge subsides, it should be expected that one or more prevention strategies may be removed -which includes allowing families to make some decisions regarding masking as local conditions improve and based upon the individual needs of their child.  Our Leadership Team is dedicated to the continuous monitoring of community transmission, vaccination coverage, screening testing, and occurrence of outbreaks to guide decisions on the level of layered prevention strategies.

These changes have allowed us to revise our protocol for Quarantine due to Household Exposure and Positive Isolations.  This is an adjustment from the communication shared with families last week and is based upon new guidance from the Kentucky Department of Public Health.  The effective date of our revised protocol for Quarantine due to Household Exposure and Positive Isolations will be Tuesday, January 18, 2022.  If the district is able to bring students back sooner based on the change in protocol, we will be communicating with those impacted separately via email to confirm the change.

We are committed to making local decisions that are responsible, timely, and appropriate to the context of the current health landscape.  Families may regularly check our Data Dashboard for updated local data considerations.  At the conclusion of this current surge in positive COVID cases, we expect to return to the original 2nd Semester Healthy at School Protocol introduced when schools reopened this month.  Our School and District leaders appreciate your flexibility and understanding as we navigate the current challenges related to COVID and institute adjustments as those become necessary.
