Highlands Theatre presents “An Evening of Social Awareness”

Highlands Theatre presents “An Evening of Social Awareness”

The Introduction to Theatre class at Highlands High School is hosting a series of three 10-15 minute one-act plays focusing on today’s prevalent social issues.

This event is taking place as the culmination of a unit where the focused on connecting theatre to real life social issues/topics. The students were given a monologue from a real play, unaware of what play it is from, and told to react personally to the content of the speech. Then, in groups, students discussed and researched social problems that resonated with them and started the playwriting process.

“The students of the class have been working on the purpose of theatre. The idea that art is supposed to reflect life,” says Jason Burgess, director of the theatre program. “The purpose of this event is for students touse their new understandings of topics they are unfamiliar with to shape their personal responses and ideas in an artistic form.”

Once the students finished writing plays, the focused turned to performance. “This is a complete theatrical process for these students,” said Burgess. “They have written the show. They will perform the show. They have had to do all the technical elements for the show as well.”

The plays will cover the topics of substance abuse/alcoholism, immigration and mental health/depression.

This event supports the goal of Fort Thomas Independent Schools and the Portrait of a Graduate model of fostering courageous leaders and empathetic collaborators while being curious and critical thinkers and creative problem solvers who are global communicators.
